From the hilly landscape of Bergisches Land to the lowlands of the Rhine: the Balkan route is the perfect connection. The name is reminiscent of the Balkan Express, as the former railway line between Leverkusen - Opladen and Remscheid - Lennep was commonly known.

The Panorama-Radweg Balkantrasse (panoramic bike trail Balkantrasse): Good to know…

Where trains ran from 1868 to the 1980s, you can now enjoy many picturesque views from the saddle of your bike: woods, meadows, quaint houses and beautiful gardens, and the town centres of Lennep, Bergisch Born, Wermelskirchen and Burscheid – here, you will find both city life and rural charm.  Milestones along the route remind us of the railway’s past, with many resting spots and restaurants to discover.

A big advantage of this former railway route is that there are hardly any inclines: this makes the Bergisches Land, which is known for its hilly landscape, ideal for exploring by bike. It is a wonderful new highlight – especially for families!
